Do you Really Need to Use Roof Flashings? The Answer is YES!
Roof flashings are a product that every roof needs if it wants to last. Without flashings, the structure that you were hoping you could rely on won’t be as reliable as you’d hoped. In our previous blog post, we started answering the question “what are roof flashings, and why do i need them?” We went over different kinds of roof flashings and what each one does. We went over chimney flashing, continuous flashing and drip edges. Here are the final roof flashings you should know about if you’re looking to build a roof and rely on it into the future.
Step Flashing
Step flashings are put into place along the side walls of chimneys, dormers and some skylights that don’t already have flashings built into them. They protect where the roof meets the wall of these parts of the home, and they are available in a variety of right-angled metal pieces. When installing step flashings, you’ll be sure to overlap it by shingles above and under it. This is so no water has the ability to get in between the flashing and the roof.
Valley Flashing
A valley flashing is for the valleys of the roof. This is defined as the place where two roof planes meet. A valley flashing is a W-shaped channel, and it is placed on the top of the felt before the shingles are installed.
Vent Pipe Flashing
A vent pipe flashing is specifically for pipe boots, and they are made to fit over pipes and flues. As the roof is applied, this cone-shaped vent pipe flashing is applied to the roof before the shingles are laid.
